Two ways across
There are two distinct services on this route, calling at different ports on Hvar island:
- Catamaran to Hvar Town — about an hour, arriving straight in the old harbour. Foot passengers only. Run by Jadrolinija and Krilo (Kapetan Luka).
- Car ferry to Stari Grad — carries vehicles, docks at the island's main vehicle port roughly 20 km from Hvar Town. Run by Jadrolinija.
Which to choose
Travelling light and staying in Hvar Town? The catamaran is the obvious choice — faster and it drops you in the centre. Bringing a car or heading to somewhere else on the island? Take the car ferry to Stari Grad, then drive to your destination. The road from Stari Grad to Hvar Town takes about 20 minutes.
Operators and booking
Jadrolinija, Croatia's national ferry line, runs both the catamaran and car ferry. Krilo (operating as Kapetan Luka) offers an additional catamaran service in summer, giving more departure options. Compare schedules for the best timing and book ahead in peak season — this is one of the busiest island routes in Croatia.
Peak season tips
July and August bring enormous crowds to Hvar. Catamaran seats sell out days ahead for popular evening sailings, and vehicle spaces on the car ferry go quickly. Book as early as your plans allow, and aim to arrive at the Split terminal with time to spare.
