The crossing
Algeciras and Ceuta are connected by one of the busiest short ferry routes in the Mediterranean. The crossing takes around 1 hour by fast ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar, linking the Spanish mainland with Spain's autonomous city of Ceuta on the North African coast. Unlike the Tarifa–Tangier crossing, Ceuta is Spanish territory, making this in formal terms a domestic journey for EU passengers.
Where it leaves from
Ferries depart from the large commercial port of Algeciras, on the western side of the Bay of Gibraltar. It is the busiest cargo and passenger port in Spain. On arrival, vessels dock at Ceuta's modern ferry terminal, close to the city centre and the land border with Morocco.
Operators
FRS, Baleària and Trasmediterránea all operate on this route, giving it one of the highest combined departure frequencies of any Mediterranean crossing. Services run throughout the day from early morning to late evening, with additional departures during the summer migration season when Moroccan-origin residents travel home via Ceuta and the adjacent border at Beni Enzar.
Practical tips
The crossing is straightforward for EU travellers, who can use national identity cards rather than passports. Vehicle travellers should allow extra time for check-in during the summer peak — July and August see very high traffic volumes, with queues forming at the Algeciras terminal. If continuing from Ceuta into Morocco, a valid passport will be required at the land border.
