Travelmar
Who they are
Travelmar is an Italian coastal ferry operator focused entirely on the Amalfi Coast, the dramatic limestone-and-cliff shoreline south of Naples. The company has run passenger boat services along this stretch for decades, and its name is inseparable from summer travel between Salerno, Amalfi and Positano.
The operation is deliberately small-scale: open-deck wooden and fibreglass launches that weave between the fishing towns and tourist resorts lining the Costiera Amalfitana. Travelmar does not operate large car ferries — vehicles must use the congested coastal road (SS163) or the Autostrada. The boats are for people who want to skip the traffic and see the coast from the water.
Like virtually every operator on the Amalfi Coast, Travelmar follows a seasonal model. The schedule opens in spring and runs through the main summer months before winding down in late autumn.
Network and routes
Travelmar's core axis links Salerno in the east with Positano in the west, calling at Amalfi and intermediate landing stages along the way. Salerno is the largest and most accessible terminus — it connects to Trenitalia rail services and is an easy day-trip base for Naples visitors — and acts as the eastern anchor of the network.
Capri is also served from Amalfi and Salerno on certain sailings, allowing travellers to combine an Amalfi Coast stop with a visit to the island without retracing their steps to Naples. Frequency is lower than the core corridor, and Capri connections are strictly seasonal.
The boats weave close to the cliffs, passing through the arches and past the colourful villages that make the Costiera one of the most photographed coastlines in Europe. Journey times are short — the full run from Salerno to Positano takes roughly an hour and a half — but the open-deck experience is the attraction, not speed.
Fleet and on board
Travelmar's vessels are open-plan passenger launches: low-slung, open-decked boats with rows of seats and canopied sections for shade. Speeds are modest; the ride is smooth on calm days but can be choppy when the sea builds. Passengers are advised to sit away from the bow in rough conditions.
There is no on-board catering service. Bring water and snacks, particularly in peak July–August heat when departures run back-to-back with minimal turnaround time. Life jackets are stowed under seats in accordance with Italian maritime regulations.
Luggage capacity is limited. Travelmar advises keeping bags small — oversized suitcases are awkward on the boarding gangways and take up passenger foot space.
Booking and tips
Tickets can be bought at the ferry piers shortly before departure or, increasingly, through online booking via the Travelmar website and aggregators. In peak season (July and August) the Amalfi–Positano sector in particular can sell out, especially on morning and late-afternoon sailings that match hotel check-out and check-in windows.
The Amalfi Coast road (SS163) regularly gridlocks in summer. The boat is almost always faster and far more pleasant between the main towns — this is the single most practical tip for any visitor to the region.
Winds and sea state can disrupt departures with little warning. The Libeccio wind (south-west) is the most common cause of cancellations. If you have an onward connection — train from Salerno, flight from Naples — allow extra time or have a land-based backup plan.
