Baleària

Spain's Balearic Islands ferry specialist

Baleària is a privately owned Spanish ferry company headquartered in Dénia, on Spain's Costa Blanca. Founded in 1998 as a small regional operator, it has grown into one of the most important ferry companies on the western Mediterranean, carrying millions of passengers a year. The company is known for investing in some of the fastest and most modern vessels on its routes, including LNG-powered ro-pax ships and high-speed catamarans.

For travellers heading to the Balearic Islands — Ibiza, Mallorca, Menorca and Formentera — Baleària is the central operator. It runs year-round from multiple mainland ports, with a dense schedule in summer. Beyond the Balearics, Baleària is also a key player on the Strait of Gibraltar, connecting southern Spain with Morocco and Ceuta.

Network and main routes

Baleària's Balearic network fans out from three mainland ports.

Barcelona is the northern gateway: overnight and daytime services run to Ibiza and Palma de Mallorca, with some sailings also reaching Mahón (Menorca). Crossings range from around 8 hours on conventional ro-pax to under 3 hours on the fast ferries.

Valencia sits in the middle of the mainland coast and offers a similar mix of fast and conventional sailings to Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca. It is a popular choice for mainland Spanish travellers who prefer a shorter drive to the port.

Dénia — Baleària's home port — is the shortest hop to the islands. The route to Ibiza (Eivissa) takes around 2.5 hours on the fast ferry and is one of Baleària's most-booked crossings in summer. Dénia also connects with Formentera via a Ibiza interchange.

On the Strait of Gibraltar, Baleària operates between Algeciras and Ceuta (Spanish territory on the Moroccan coast), a crossing of under an hour, as well as services to Morocco.

Fleet and on board

Baleària's fleet mixes conventional ro-pax ferries with high-speed vessels, giving passengers a choice on many routes between price and journey time.

The conventional ships are large and well-equipped, with reclining seats, cabin berths, self-service restaurants, a café bar, and exterior sun decks. Overnight crossings have a range of cabin categories — from basic interior berths to en-suite cabins — making them a genuine alternative to flying when you have luggage or a car.

The fast ferries are wave-piercing catamaran designs; significantly shorter journey times come with a smaller passenger lounge and less vehicle capacity, so these tend to book up earlier in summer.

Baleària has invested in LNG (liquefied natural gas) propulsion on newer vessels, reducing emissions on the busiest routes — an aspect the company highlights as part of a broader sustainability programme.

Booking and tips

Book as early as possible for July and August, especially if you have a vehicle. The fast-ferry sailings from Dénia fill up weeks in advance in peak summer. Conventional overnight crossings from Barcelona and Valencia have more capacity but also see heavy demand.

Ticket prices vary significantly by sailing type, cabin grade and booking window. The advance-purchase fares are noticeably cheaper than last-minute tickets. Travelling midweek and choosing the conventional overnight ferry instead of the fast boat can also bring the cost down.

If you plan to island-hop — for example, Mallorca to Ibiza, or Ibiza to Formentera — Baleària covers several of those inter-island links too, which makes it possible to plan a loop without backtracking to the mainland.

You can book on Baleària's website directly or through comparison platforms like Direct Ferries, which list competing operators on the same routes for easy comparison.
