Ibiza to Formentera Ferry

The Ibiza to Formentera ferry is one of the busiest short crossings in Spain. Baleària, Trasmapi, Formentera Lines and Aquabus sail from Ibiza Town to La Savina, Formentera's only port. The fast ferries take about 30 minutes, and adult one-way tickets usually cost €18–50. In summer there are over 60 crossings a day, from about 06:00 until the last boats back at around 01:30. The one thing a first-timer should know: your ferry may not leave from the main Ibiza terminal. Most operators use the maritime station on Avinguda de Santa Eulària, but Baleària's electric ferry uses a separate pier about 20 minutes' walk away.

Ferry options compared

The four ferry companies operate two kinds of boat on the Formentera route.

Fast ferries (about 30 minutes)

• Baleària runs frequent fast ferries on the route, with the quickest crossings listed at 29 minutes. Direct Ferries counts about 105 Baleària sailings a week. See our Baleària guide.
• Trasmapi runs Fast Ferry and Fast Car Ferry boats, with more than 30 departures a day in summer. Crossing time is 30–35 minutes. Its car ferries take vehicles up to 2.10 m high.
• Formentera Lines runs fast ferries from the same Ibiza Town terminal, about 35 sailings a week according to Direct Ferries. In summer it sells a Ferry + Bus ticket that includes a tourist bus to Ses Illetes and Es Pujols from La Savina.

Trasmapi and Formentera Lines are often sold together by resellers, so you will see the phrase "Trasmapi and Formentera Lines" on many booking pages.

Slower ferries (about 1 hour)

• Baleària Cap de Barbaria is Spain's first 100% electric ferry. It carries 390 passengers plus vehicles and freight, and takes about an hour. At launch Baleària scheduled four departures a day from each island between 07:00 and 22:00. It leaves from a different pier from the fast ferries.
• Aquabus runs low-cost boats from Ibiza Town and a separate line from Figueretas and Playa d'en Bossa. The trip takes about an hour. Luggage, bikes and pets travel at no extra cost, which makes it popular with cyclists and families on a budget.

Which one to choose

• Fastest and most frequent: Baleària or Trasmapi fast ferries.
• Cheapest: Aquabus, or an early booking with a web discount.
• With a car or motorbike: Trasmapi Fast Car Ferry or a Baleària vehicle ferry.
• Staying near Playa d'en Bossa: the Aquabus line saves you a trip into Ibiza Town.

On a 30-minute crossing seasickness is rarely an issue, but the fast ferries can feel lively in a strong wind. If you are sensitive, sit in the middle of the boat on the lower deck.

Timetable and season

The Ibiza to Formentera ferry runs all year.

• High season (May to October). Boats leave roughly every 30 minutes in both directions. The first ferry from Ibiza is at about 06:00–06:30 and the last return from Formentera is around 01:30. Ferryhopper counts more than 60 crossings a day.
• Low season (November to April). Frequency drops to about one boat an hour, with the first ferry at about 07:00 and the last at about 21:45. Ferryhopper still counts more than 30 crossings a day across all operators.

Getting to the ferry in Ibiza

Most Formentera ferries depart from the maritime station at Avinguda de Santa Eulària 100, in Ibiza Town, next to the marina. Trasmapi, Baleària, Formentera Lines and Aquabus all use it. Mainland ferries in the port of Ibiza, to Barcelona, Valencia and Dénia, use Botafoc on the other side of the harbour. More detail is in our Ibiza ferries guide.

• On foot. From Vara de Rey, the Parc square and the marina shops, the terminal is under 10 minutes' walk.
• Parking. The Es Pratet car park is about 5 minutes' walk from the maritime station. The free Des Gorg car park, near Ikea, is about 15 minutes' walk away.
• Baleària Cap de Barbaria. This ferry leaves from a different pier, about 20 minutes' walk from the maritime station. Allow for this if your ticket says Cap de Barbaria.
• Aquabus from the beaches. The Figueretas and Playa d'en Bossa line leaves from the beach piers, not from the port.

Arrive 20–30 minutes before a fast ferry in July and August, when queues build at the boarding gates. With a car, allow more time and follow the signs for vehicle boarding.

Arriving in Formentera

All boats dock at La Savina port on the north side of Formentera, about 3.5 km from Sant Francesc Xavier, the island's small capital. La Savina port is compact: ticket offices, cafés, car rentals and scooter hire are a few steps from the gangway.

Getting around from La Savina:

• Bus. Line L1 runs a loop via Sant Francesc, Sant Ferran and Es Pujols. Line L2 goes east to Es Caló and the lighthouse at Far de la Mola. Line L3 runs to Ses Illetes beach and Es Pujols. Tickets cost about €2–3. Services run most often in summer.
• Rent scooters, bikes or cars. The rental offices by the port are the easiest way to explore Formentera at your own pace. Formentera is small and mostly flat, and e-bikes cover much of it.
• Taxi. Taxis serve the port, but in peak weeks it is quicker to book transport in advance.

Top spots within easy reach: Ses Illetes and Llevant beaches in the Ses Salines natural park, Cala Saona on the west coast, and La Mola lighthouse at the island's eastern tip.

Tickets and prices

You can book online with Baleària, Trasmapi, Formentera Lines or Aquabus, through comparison sites such as Ferryhopper and Direct Ferries, or at the ticket offices in the maritime station. Buying online is usually cheaper and lets you skip the ticket queue; many operators offer web discounts, and some publish seasonal promo codes on partner sites.

What drives ferry prices:

• Operator and boat. Adult one-way fast ferry tickets typically cost €18–50. Trasmapi starts at about €23 and Baleària at about €29. Aquabus is the budget option.
• Return or single. Typical web return fares were €45–49 in 2026.
• Discounts. Trasmapi gives up to 45% off for children aged 2 to 13 and over-60s, and children under 2 travel free. Baleària gives 50% off for children under 12 and 20% off for passengers up to 30 or over 60. Aquabus gives Balearic residents 75% off.
• Vehicles. Cars start at about €21 per trip off-peak.

Taking a vehicle in summer

From 1 June to 30 September 2026 Formentera limits visitor vehicles through the Formentera.eco system: 1,732 cars and 122 motorcycles a day. You need a permit before you sail, and the ferry company may refuse to board a vehicle without one. Fees in 2026 were €6 a day (minimum €30) for cars in June and September, and €9 a day (minimum €45) in July and August. Motorcycles pay half. Rental fleets based on Formentera are exempt, which is why most visitors rent on arrival instead of bringing a car from Ibiza.

Tips

• Book the return in summer. The last evening boats back to Ibiza fill up in July and August. A ticket with a flexible return is worth it if you do not want to watch the clock.
• Go early for a day trip. A boat before 09:00 gets you to Ses Illetes before the crowds arrive.
• Plan how you will get around before you land. In July and August the rental desks at La Savina are busy, so booking a scooter, bike or car online before you sail saves time on arrival.
• Check the wind. Strong winds can delay or cancel the slower boats and make the fast ferry crossing rough. Operators update ferry timetables on the day.
• Consider staying a night. With the first ferry at about 06:00 and the last return around 01:30 in summer, a day trip is easy, but a night on the island lets you see Formentera in the early morning and at sunset without watching the clock.
