Formentera Ferries

Everything you need to know about ferries to and from Formentera — the La Savina terminal, connections from Ibiza Town and Sant Antoni, and how to plan a visit to the smallest and most unspoiled of the Balearic islands.

The port: La Savina

All ferries to Formentera arrive at La Savina, a purpose-built harbour in the north of the island. The terminal is compact and functional — there's little to detain you here — and the attraction is what lies beyond: the island's flat, pine-fringed landscape and the shallow turquoise lagoon of Estany des Peix immediately to the west of the port. Bicycle and moped hire is available a few steps from the quay, which is the recommended way to explore. The salt flats (ses salines) stretch along the coast, and flamingos are a regular sight.

Routes from Formentera

Ibiza Town (Eivissa) is the only year-round ferry connection, operated by Baleària and Trasmediterránea among others. Fast ferries cover the 30-minute crossing frequently — in summer the route runs almost like a shuttle service. Sant Antoni de Portmany on Ibiza's west coast also has seasonal fast ferry connections to La Savina, convenient if you're staying in that part of Ibiza. There are no direct ferries from Formentera to the other Balearic islands or to the Spanish mainland — Ibiza is always the gateway.

Beaches and the island interior

Formentera's calling card is its beaches: Ses Illetes at the northern tip of the Trucadors peninsula is consistently rated among the best in Europe, with water of extraordinary clarity in shades of green and blue. The southern cape, La Mola, rises to a lighthouse with wide views. Between them, the island is mostly flat and ideal for cycling — the distance from La Savina to La Mola is under 20 kilometres. The small towns of Sant Francesc (the capital) and Sant Ferran have a relaxed, unhurried feel.

Planning tips

Formentera has no mass-tourism infrastructure by design — there are no large hotel complexes, and the island imposes strict environmental controls on visitor numbers during peak season. Accommodation is limited and expensive; book many months ahead for July and August. If you're coming as a day trip from Ibiza, the first morning ferry gives you the most time before the beaches fill. Bringing a bicycle on the ferry is possible and worth the small fee — it saves hiring one locally and lets you explore at your own pace.
