Network and routes
The Strait of Messina is Caronte & Tourist's primary operation. The Villa San Giovanni to Messina crossing is one of the busiest short-sea ferry routes in Europe: every vehicle travelling between mainland Italy and Sicily by road must use it (there is no fixed link). The company runs multiple vessels simultaneously on the 3-kilometre strait, providing a near-continuous shuttle throughout the day and into the night.
The Aeolian Islands operation departs from Milazzo, the port on Sicily's Tyrrhenian coast closest to the archipelago. Car-ferry services connect Milazzo to the islands of Lipari (the archipelago's main hub), Stromboli, Salina, Panarea, Vulcano, Filicudi and Alicudi. These ro-ro ferries are the primary means by which residents and self-driving visitors bring vehicles to the islands.
Fleet and on board
The Strait of Messina fleet consists of purpose-built ro-ro shuttle ferries designed for rapid turnaround: vehicles board from one end and disembark from the other, minimising time in port. Passenger facilities are modest but adequate for a 20-minute crossing — covered lounge areas, a bar, and open deck space.
The Aeolian Islands vessels are larger ro-ro ferries with more extensive passenger accommodation, suitable for the longer inter-island crossings. A café-bar and seating lounges are standard. The Aeolian crossing from Milazzo to Lipari takes roughly two hours on the conventional ferry; onward island hops are shorter.
Booking and tips
For the Strait of Messina crossing, Caronte & Tourist tickets can be purchased at the port or online. The frequency of sailings means queuing and boarding the next available ferry is the norm for cars; in summer, the heaviest traffic periods (Friday evenings southbound, Sunday evenings northbound) may involve a wait of one to two sailings.
For the Aeolian Islands, booking vehicle space in advance is strongly recommended for July and August — the islands have limited car capacity and summer demand from Italian holidaymakers is intense. Foot passengers have more flexibility but should still book ahead for peak sailings. The Aeolian Islands are best explored without a car given the small scale of each island; many visitors leave their vehicle in Milazzo.
