The crossing

The Ancona–Split route is the busiest Italy–Croatia car-ferry link, covering about 270 km of Adriatic in roughly 10–11 hours. Most sailings depart in the evening and arrive the following morning, turning the crossing into an efficient overnight that replaces both a hotel stay and a long drive around the head of the Adriatic. Jadrolinija and SNAV are the principal operators.

On board

Both operators offer a range of accommodation from basic aircraft-style reclining seats to private cabins with en-suite facilities. There are restaurants or cafeterias, bars, and deck space for watching the sea. A private or shared cabin is well worth the extra cost for a 10-hour overnight; budget travellers use the deck in warm weather or choose reclining-seat accommodation.

Taking a car or campervan

Loading vehicles is straightforward: check in at Ancona's Stazione Marittima with your booking reference, and follow the drive-on lane onto the vehicle deck. Campervans and motorhomes are common on this route in summer — book vehicle space early as large-vehicle slots sell out faster. The return Split–Ancona sailing follows the same process at Split's Riva terminal.

Booking tips

Summer bookings — particularly July and August, and around Croatian public holidays — should be made well in advance. Cabin berths and car-deck space both sell out. Compare Jadrolinija and SNAV for schedules, prices and cabin availability; early-booking fares can be significantly cheaper than last-minute prices.
