The crossing
Tarifa and Tangier face each other across the Strait of Gibraltar, the narrowest point between Europe and Africa. The fast-ferry crossing takes approximately 1 hour, making it one of the most dramatic short sea crossings in the world — on a clear day you can see the Moroccan coastline before you even board. It is also the quickest route between mainland Spain and Morocco.
Where it leaves from
Ferries depart from the port of Tarifa, a windsurfers' hub at Spain's southernmost tip. The terminal is central and walkable from the old town. Arriving passengers dock at Tangier Ville (Tangier City port), which is separate from the larger Tangier Med cargo port further east — make sure your ticket specifies Tangier Ville if you want to arrive in the city centre.
Operators
FRS (Fast Robert Shipping) and Baleària both operate high-speed ferries on this crossing, with multiple departures throughout the day. Both carry vehicles as well as foot passengers, and both have check-in facilities at the Tarifa terminal.
Practical tips
Arrive at the terminal well before departure, especially with a vehicle — border formalities on both sides add time. Ensure all passengers have valid passports (identity cards are not accepted for Morocco). If you are taking a car, confirm the required documentation (insurance green card, vehicle registration and, if applicable, a hire-car letter of permission) before you travel.
