The crossing
Vis is the furthest of the main central Dalmatian islands from Split, sitting 45 km offshore. Jadrolinija is the sole scheduled operator on the route. The car ferry is the backbone of the service and takes roughly 2.5 hours; a faster catamaran does the crossing in about 1.5 hours and is foot-passenger only. Both services use Split's central ferry terminal.
Vis Town
The ferry arrives at Vis Town, a small harbour on the north coast of the island with a relaxed waterfront of stone houses, wine bars and restaurants. The island was closed to foreign visitors until 1989 — its relative isolation kept it less developed than Hvar or Brač, and that unhurried character persists today.
Komiza and the Blue Cave
The island's second town, Komiža, is on the western side of the island, about 10 km from Vis Town by road. From Komiža, boat tours run to Biševo and the famous Blue Cave — a sea cave where the interior glows vivid blue in morning light. The cave is a popular day-trip destination from the whole Dalmatian coast.
Practical tips
Jadrolinija's schedule is the lifeline for island residents and tends to be reliable year-round, with more sailings in summer. If you are bringing a car, book ahead for July and August — the island's limited road network means demand for car-ferry space is high relative to the island's size.
