Vis Ferries

Everything you need to know about ferries to and from Vis — the Vis Town harbour, connections from Split, and how to plan a visit to one of Dalmatia's most remote and unspoiled islands.

The port: Vis Town

Ferries to Vis arrive at Vis Town (Grad), the island's main settlement on the north-east coast. The harbour is set in a deep bay and the town stretches along the waterfront, with cafes and restaurants close to the quay. A second settlement, Komiža, lies on the west coast — roughly 10 kilometres by road over the island's central ridge. Buses and taxis meet the ferry, but having your own wheels (bike, scooter or car) gives significantly more flexibility.

Routes from Vis

Split is the only year-round mainland connection. Jadrolinija operates a car ferry taking approximately 2–2.5 hours; this is the principal lifeline for residents and the main way to bring a vehicle. In summer, high-speed catamarans (operated by Jadrolinija and occasionally other carriers) cut the journey to around 1.5 hours but carry passengers only. Frequency drops sharply in winter — typically just one or two daily sailings.

Exploring the island

Vis rewards slow travel. The island's attractions include the Blue Cave (Modra špilja) near Biševo — accessible only by small boat excursion from Komiža — and the military tunnels from the Yugoslav era. The beaches at Stiniva and Srebrna are among the most praised in Dalmatia. Inland, the wine-growing valley around Podhumlje produces the distinctive Vugava white wine. Most visiting cyclists tackle the main road over the ridge between Vis Town and Komiža as their first half-day ride.

Planning tips

Accommodation on Vis is limited relative to demand — book well ahead in summer. The ferry timetable is the master schedule for the island's life, so check departures before finalising plans. Bringing a car makes sense for a stay of several days; foot passengers can hire scooters or bikes locally. The island remains significantly less packaged than Hvar, which appeals to many visitors.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to Vis by ferry?
The main route is Jadrolinija's car ferry from Split to Vis Town, taking around 2–2.5 hours. High-speed catamarans also run in summer, completing the crossing in roughly 1.5 hours.
Is there a ferry from Hvar to Vis?
There is no direct scheduled ferry between Hvar and Vis Town. The most practical connection is to return to Split and take the Vis ferry from there.
Is Vis very remote?
Vis is the furthest inhabited Croatian island from the mainland, and tourism developed later here than on Hvar or Brač. That remoteness is now one of its biggest draws — the island is less crowded and more authentic in feel.
