Where it leaves from
The crossing departs from Killini, the small ferry port on the northwestern Peloponnese, which also serves as the departure point for Zakynthos. Killini operates as a two-destination ferry hub — ferries to Zakynthos and ferries to Poros (Kefalonia) both depart from the same port, making it a useful staging point for travellers combining both islands on a single Ionian trip.
The crossing to Poros
The ferry arrives at Poros, in the southeastern corner of Kefalonia, after a roughly 1.5-hour crossing. This is a different port from the Patras–Sami connection, so if your destination on Kefalonia is the southern part of the island, Killini is the more convenient mainland departure point. Levante Ferries, the dominant Ionian operator, runs the route with conventional car ferries. There is no high-speed service.
Levante Ferries on the Ionian
Levante Ferries is the principal carrier across the Ionian Sea routes from the Greek mainland — connecting the Peloponnese to both Kefalonia and Zakynthos, as well as operating the longer Patras–Sami route. The company runs modern vehicle-carrying ferries and maintains year-round timetables on all three Ionian routes, with substantially higher frequency in summer.
From Poros into Kefalonia
Poros is a small but characterful harbour in the south of the island, with a modest village and a few tavernas along the quay. Car hire is available, and the road north connects to Skala and the southern beaches, and onwards to Argostoli. If you are heading to the northern part of the island — Fiskardo, Assos, Myrtos Beach — the Sami port (served from Patras) or the road via Argostoli puts you closer. Plan your route across the island before choosing your mainland departure port.
