The ports: Sami and Poros

Kefalonia has two main ferry ports serving different parts of the island. Sami, on the eastern coast roughly mid-island, handles the Patras connection and is the busier of the two. Poros, in the southeast corner, serves ferries from Killini on the western Peloponnese. Each port is a working harbour with a modest terminal and car-ramp facilities.

Connections from the mainland

Levante Ferries dominates the Ionian Sea routes from the Greek mainland, running car ferries from both Patras (to Sami) and Killini (to Poros). The Patras–Sami route is the longer crossing, passing through the deep channel between Kefalonia and the mainland; the Killini–Poros crossing is considerably shorter. Both routes operate year-round, with increased frequency in summer.

Getting around from Sami

Sami itself is a small harbour town, but buses and taxis connect it to Argostoli, the island capital, roughly 25 kilometres to the west. If you are arriving with a car, road signs are reasonably clear; the coastal road from Sami to Argostoli passes near several of the island's most visited caves and beaches.

Planning tips

Kefalonia's ferry ports are less crowded than the major Aegean hubs, but car spaces on the overnight and weekend sailings from Patras book up in high season. Foot passengers have more flexibility. If your destination on the island is the south, consider the Killini–Poros crossing as it lands you much closer to the southern villages.
