Getting to Volos

Volos is a port city on the Pagasetic Gulf in central Greece, about 3.5 hours from Athens by road (KTEL bus or car). It is the main gateway to the Sporades archipelago. The ferry terminal is centrally located on the waterfront, with cafés and services nearby.

The route through the Sporades

The Volos–Alonnisos service calls at Skiathos and Skopelos (typically at both Glossa/Loutraki and Skopelos Town) before reaching Alonnisos. This island-to-island routing is part of the charm — the approach to each island through the sheltered, pine-forested channels is one of the most scenic ferry journeys in Greece. Alonnisos is the final stop and the most northerly inhabited island of the Sporades.

Fast ferry vs conventional

  • High-speed ferry (Hellenic Seaways) — approximately 3 to 4 hours from Volos to Alonnisos, with intermediate stops. Carries passengers and some vehicles.
  • Conventional ferry — approximately 5 hours, carries cars and heavier vehicles.

In good weather, the fast ferry is an excellent choice. The meltemi can be stronger in late summer, making the conventional option more comfortable in rough conditions.

Alonnisos: the wild Sporades

Alonnisos is the least developed of the main Sporades and home to the National Marine Park of Alonnisos and the Northern Sporades — the largest protected marine area in the Mediterranean. The park protects a population of Mediterranean monk seals (Monachus monachus), one of the world's rarest marine mammals. Walks through the old hilltop village of Chora and boat trips to the uninhabited islands of Kyra Panagia and Gioura are the island's main draws. This is the Sporades for travellers who want quiet beaches, clear water and wildlife rather than nightlife.
