Getting to the ferry port
Unlike most Greek island ferries, the Athens–Skiathos connection does not sail from Piraeus. You first travel overland to the mainland port of Agios Konstantinos (about 2.5 hours from Athens by KTEL bus or car) or Volos (about 3.5 hours). KTEL buses connect Athens's Liossion terminal to both ports; driving allows more flexibility. From either port, Hellenic Seaways operates the ferry service into the northern Sporades.
The crossing
High-speed services from Agios Konstantinos to Skiathos take roughly 1.5 to 2 hours; from Volos it is slightly longer at up to 2.5 hours due to the extended coastal approach. Conventional ferry sailings reach Skiathos in approximately 3 hours and carry vehicles. Some services continue from Skiathos to Skopelos and Alonissos, making it easy to combine all three Sporades on a single trip. Note that both ports are departure options — check which serves your schedule better.
Operators
Hellenic Seaways is the principal operator on the Sporades routes. The company runs both conventional car ferries and faster Flying Dolphin-style services. In peak season frequency increases; in winter sailings are limited and can be weather-dependent.
Skiathos: the Sporades gateway
Skiathos is the most visited of the Sporades, famous for Koukounaries beach — one of the most photographed in Greece — and the forested interior that inspired the Mamma Mia film setting. The small harbour town is lively in summer. Onward connections to Skopelos (45 minutes) and Alonissos are straightforward from Skiathos pier.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I get from Athens to Skiathos by ferry?
- Take a bus or drive to Volos (about 3.5 hours from Athens) or Agios Konstantinos (about 2.5 hours), then board a Hellenic Seaways ferry to Skiathos. High-speed services take 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on the departure port.
- Which port should I use — Volos or Agios Konstantinos?
- Agios Konstantinos is closer to Athens (around 2.5 hours by bus or car) and is the most common starting point. Volos is further but has more city facilities and is useful if you are already in central Greece.
