A short island hop

The Skiathos–Skopelos crossing is one of the shorter scheduled ferry links in the Greek islands — fast catamarans cover the distance in around 45 minutes, while conventional car ferries take about 1.5 hours. Both ports are small and easy to navigate: Skiathos Town has a double harbour, and Skopelos Town's ferry quay sits beneath a hillside of white houses stacked above the water. The backdrop on arrival in Skopelos is one of the prettiest in the Sporades.

Service and operators

Hellenic Seaways operates both the fast and conventional services on this route. In summer there are typically 2 to 4 crossings per day; in winter frequency drops to 1 or 2 and can be weather-dependent. Some sailings continue from Skopelos onward to Alonissos, the most remote and least developed of the three main Sporades, making a three-island loop straightforward from a single ferry ticket.

Skopelos Town and the island

Skopelos Town (Chora) is one of the most handsome port towns in the Aegean — steeply terraced with over 120 churches and a Venetian kastro at the top. The island is largely forested (pines and olive groves) and has excellent hiking trails linking beaches and monasteries. The church of Agios Ioannis Kastri, perched on a rock above the sea at Kastani Beach, is the Mamma Mia scene everyone has on their list — a steep but short climb.

Onwards from Skopelos

From Skopelos you can continue to Alonissos (30–45 minutes) for an even quieter, more natural experience within the National Marine Park of Alonissos. Returning to the mainland uses the reverse route: Skopelos back to Skiathos, then ferry to Agios Konstantinos or Volos for the bus or drive back to Athens.
