Two services, one destination

Split has two distinct connections to the western end of Korčula island, both calling at Vela Luka:

  • Jadrolinija car ferry — carries vehicles, roughly 3 hours, the practical choice for anyone with a car or campervan.
  • Krilo catamaran — faster in calm conditions but foot passengers only; also roughly 3 hours on this longer crossing.

Vela Luka vs Korčula Town

Korčula island is long and thin, and its two main ports are at opposite ends. Vela Luka (served by this route) is at the western tip — a quieter, more local town surrounded by olive groves and small bays. Korčula Town, at the eastern end, is the historic walled city associated with Marco Polo; it is served by different routes from Split and Dubrovnik. Check your accommodation carefully: the drive between the two ends of the island takes about 45 minutes.

Taking a car

The Jadrolinija car ferry is the main option for drivers. In summer, vehicle spaces on the Split–Vela Luka crossing sell out, especially on peak-season weekends. Book as early as possible if you are travelling with a car in July or August. Foot passengers have more flexibility and can usually buy tickets closer to departure outside the peak weeks.

Onward from Vela Luka

From Vela Luka, local buses run across the island toward Korčula Town. Car hire is available in the town. Seasonal catamaran connections also link Vela Luka with Lastovo island — one of Croatia's most remote and unspoiled Adriatic destinations, worth the extra hop if your schedule allows.
