Where it leaves from
Milazzo is the principal jumping-off point for the Aeolian Islands on Sicily's north-east coast. The ferry port is in the town centre and is reached easily by car from Messina (about 40 km) or by rail. From Milazzo, ferries and hydrofoils fan out to all seven Aeolian Islands, with Vulcano — named for the active volcano that gives the archipelago its characteristic smell of sulphur — the first island encountered on the route.
High-speed vs car ferry
- Hydrofoil (aliscafo) — around 40 minutes, foot passengers only, very frequent in summer.
- Car ferry — roughly 1.5 hours, carries vehicles and is more weather-tolerant.
Most visitors to Vulcano travel as foot passengers; the island is compact and a hired scooter or bicycle is sufficient for a day visit or short stay. The hydrofoil is the typical choice for a quick crossing.
Operators
Liberty Lines operates the main hydrofoil schedules from Milazzo and provides the fastest, most frequent connections to Vulcano and the other Aeolian Islands in summer. Siremar runs car ferry services on the same corridor. Both operators continue to Lipari, Salina, Panarea, Stromboli and the other islands beyond Vulcano.
Planning tips
Vulcano's sulphurous mud baths and crater hike make it a popular day trip from Lipari or a stand-alone stop. Book in advance for summer sailings from Milazzo — the Aeolian Islands are busy in July and August. Services can be suspended during strong north-westerly winds (maestrale); the conventional ferry is more reliable in choppy conditions than the hydrofoil.
