The crossing

The Lipari–Vulcano crossing is one of the shortest inter-island ferry links in the Mediterranean — the two islands sit just a few kilometres apart and high-speed hydrofoils make the hop in around 10 minutes. Lipari is the largest and most populated of the Aeolian Islands; Vulcano, just to the south, is famous for its active volcano, sulphurous mud baths and hot springs.

Operators

Liberty Lines runs frequent hydrofoil services linking Lipari and Vulcano year-round. Siremar also operates on the Aeolian inter-island routes. Given the short distance, most crossings are made by high-speed craft, but car ferry services are available for those needing to move vehicles between the islands.

Day trips and island-hopping

The quick hop makes Vulcano a natural day trip from Lipari. Many visitors based on Lipari take the morning hydrofoil to hike the Gran Cratere (volcano rim walk, about 2–3 hours return) and soak in the famous fanghi (sulphur mud baths) before returning in the afternoon. The crossing is also a standard leg in a longer Aeolian island-hopping circuit starting or finishing at Milazzo.

Planning tips

Services are frequent and year-round, so advance booking is rarely essential for foot passengers on this short crossing. In peak summer the Aeolian Islands are busy — if you need a specific sailing time, booking ahead is sensible. Note that high-speed services can be suspended in strong maestrale winds; in that case the car ferry or a slightly longer route via Milazzo may be the alternative.
