Milazzo: departure point for the Aeolians
Milazzo is the main ferry hub for the Aeolian Islands on Sicily's north coast, and the practical starting point for any visit to Panarea. The ferry port is compact and close to the town centre. Milazzo is reachable by train from Messina (about 30 minutes) and is connected to Palermo and Catania by the A20 motorway.
Fast hydrofoil only
The crossing from Milazzo to Panarea is served exclusively by Liberty Lines high-speed hydrofoils. There is no conventional car ferry to Panarea — the island is tiny and has no roads in the normal sense, so cars are simply not taken there. The hydrofoil takes roughly 1 hour 15 minutes, often with intermediate stops at Lipari or Salina along the way. Direct sailings may be faster; check the timetable for your preferred departure.
Panarea: the smallest and most exclusive
Panarea is the smallest inhabited island in the Aeolian archipelago and the one with the most glamorous reputation. The flat-topped island has no cars and no through roads — electric vehicles and golf carts used by locals are the only motorised transport. Visitors walk everywhere. The cluster of whitewashed houses at San Pietro is the island's only village, and the small harbour is where all ferries arrive.
Planning around the season
Panarea is strongly seasonal. In July and August the island draws a fashionable crowd and ferry demand is high — book hydrofoil seats well in advance. From October through May the island quietens dramatically, most accommodation and restaurants close, and ferry services become very infrequent. If travelling in shoulder season, confirm the current schedule directly with Liberty Lines before committing to dates. Weather also plays a role: high-speed hydrofoils are suspended when seas are rough, and Panarea's exposed position means it can be affected more readily than the more sheltered islands.
