The crossing
The Jadrolinija car ferry connects Makarska, on the Makarska Riviera of the Dalmatian mainland, with Sumartin on the eastern tip of Brač island. The crossing takes about an hour and carries cars, motorcycles, campervans and foot passengers. It is the most direct connection between the Makarska area and Brač, and is an alternative to the more heavily used Split–Supetar route for travellers based south of Split.
Using it for Brač
Sumartin is a quiet village at the far eastern end of Brač. Most visitors who arrive here are heading across the island toward Bol (famous for Zlatni Rat beach) or Supetar (the main ferry port). The drive from Sumartin to Bol is around 30–35 km, taking roughly 40 minutes on the winding island road. Car hire is limited in Sumartin itself, so bring your own vehicle or arrange onward transport in advance.
Taking a car
The Makarska–Sumartin car ferry carries vehicles without needing specialist booking in most of the shoulder season. In July and August, spaces can fill on peak summer sailings — arrive at Makarska port with time to spare, or book ahead to avoid missing a crossing. Makarska has parking near the ferry terminal and is easy to reach from the A1 motorway via the Zagvozd or Šestanovac exits.
Alternatives for Brač
If Sumartin's remote position is inconvenient for your plans, the Split–Supetar route is the most frequent car ferry to Brač and gives better access to the rest of the island. However, for travellers staying in Makarska or the Riviera, the direct crossing to Sumartin saves the drive back to Split.
