Capri Ferries
Everything you need to know about ferries to and from Capri — the Marina Grande port, connections from Naples, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast, and how to plan a day trip or longer stay.
The port: Marina Grande
Capri's only ferry port is Marina Grande, a bustling harbour on the island's north shore. All scheduled passenger services — hydrofoils and ferries from Naples, Sorrento, Positano and the Amalfi Coast — dock here. From the quayside, the island's famous funicular climbs directly up to Capri town, and buses connect to Anacapri. The waterfront itself is lined with restaurants and boat-hire operators, so there's no reason to rush away from the port on arrival.
Routes to and from Capri
The two main departure points are Naples (Molo Beverello) and Sorrento, with Sorrento offering a shorter crossing of around 20–25 minutes by hydrofoil. From Naples the journey takes roughly 45–50 minutes. Seasonal services also run from Positano, Amalfi and Salerno, making Capri easy to weave into an Amalfi Coast itinerary. Operators including Caremar and SNAV run the main scheduled lines; several smaller companies add high-season capacity.
Day trip or overnight stay
Capri is the most-visited island in the Bay of Naples, and the main piazzetta and the Blue Grotto queues build quickly after mid-morning. If you're coming for the day, take the first or second departure from Naples or Sorrento and aim to catch a late-afternoon ferry back to avoid the crush. If you're staying overnight, the island becomes noticeably quieter once day-trippers leave — especially in September and October.
Planning tips
Book return tickets in advance in July and August — peak-summer sailings sell out, particularly late-afternoon departures back to the mainland. Services can be reduced or suspended in bad weather, when high winds make the exposed crossing difficult for hydrofoils. On those days, the slower conventional ferry is more likely to run, though it too may be delayed.
