Where it leaves from

Ferries to Leros leave from Piraeus, Athens's main port, about 40 minutes from the city centre by metro. Blue Star Ferries operates the Dodecanese route, which typically departs in the evening, calling at Patmos first, then Leros roughly 9 to 10 hours after leaving Piraeus.

An overnight crossing with a stop at Patmos

The service calls at Patmos (around hour 7–8) before continuing south to Leros, which it reaches in the early morning. This makes the crossing almost entirely nocturnal — ideal for travellers who prefer not to lose a day at sea. A cabin berth turns a 10-hour voyage into an efficient overnight journey.

On board

Blue Star's large ferries on the Dodecanese line carry cars and motorcycles on the vehicle deck, and offer a range of sleeping accommodation — from airline-style reclining seats in a shared cabin to private two-berth cabins with en-suite facilities. There is also a cafeteria, bar and outdoor deck seating.

Leros: the art deco island

Leros is one of the best-kept secrets in the Dodecanese. The island was under Italian rule from 1912 to 1943, and the legacy is visible in the striking Rationalist architecture of Lakki — a grid of wide boulevards, curved facades and modernist buildings quite unlike anywhere else in Greece. Above Platanos village, the Byzantine Castle of Panteli offers views across to Turkey. The island's calm atmosphere, good tavernas and strong café culture make it a rewarding stop on any Dodecanese itinerary.
