Where it leaves from
The ferry to Kos leaves from Piraeus, the large port south of Athens (about 40 minutes from central Athens on the metro). Kos Town's harbour sits right at the heart of the island, with the medieval Castle of the Knights reflected in the water and plenty of accommodation and rental shops within walking distance of the quay.
An overnight Aegean crossing
Piraeus to Kos is a 10 to 11-hour voyage, which most travellers make overnight to avoid losing a day. Blue Star ferries serving the Dodecanese typically call at intermediate islands — often Patmos, Leros and Kalymnos — before reaching Kos. If the boat calls at multiple islands your journey may be at the longer end of the range; direct or shorter-stop routings are faster. An economy cabin or a two-berth private cabin makes the crossing comfortable.
On board and booking
Blue Star's vessels on the Dodecanese route are large, modern ships with cabins, a cafeteria, bar, and open-deck seating. Book a cabin berth for overnight travel — deck seats are significantly less comfortable over 10-plus hours. In July and August both passenger seats and car spaces sell out, so reserve early.
Kos and beyond
Kos is the second largest island in the Dodecanese and is particularly known for its beaches, ancient ruins (the Asklepion, birthplace of Hippocrates) and flat terrain that makes it ideal for cycling. From Kos Town there are local ferries and fast boats to the smaller islands of Nisyros, Tilos, Symi and Kalymnos, and to Rhodes a few hours further south.
