Where it leaves from

Ferries to Kalymnos sail from Piraeus, the large port of Athens (about 40 minutes from central Athens on metro Line 1). The Blue Star Ferries Dodecanese service departs in the evening and works south through the islands, reaching Pothia — Kalymnos's capital — around 10 to 11 hours later.

Stopping at Patmos and Leros

Northbound from Kalymnos the service calls at Leros and then Patmos before continuing north; southbound from Piraeus it reverses the order. This makes it easy to combine Patmos, Leros and Kalymnos in one trip, breaking your journey at each island for a day or two before moving on. Patmos is typically reached around hour 7–8, Leros around hour 9, and Kalymnos around hour 10–11.

On board and booking

Blue Star's large ferries on the Dodecanese route offer cabin classes from economy berths to private two-berth or four-berth cabins, plus a cafeteria, bar and open-deck seating. Cabin berths are strongly recommended for overnight crossings — deck seating over 10-plus hours is uncomfortable, particularly if the sea is choppy. Book early in summer for the best cabin selection and to secure vehicle space.

Kalymnos: sponge diving and rock climbing

Kalymnos is historically famous for sponge diving — a tradition dating back centuries, celebrated each spring with the Sponge Diving Festival. Today the island draws an international crowd of rock climbers, with world-class limestone routes above the villages of Massouri and Telendos. The tiny islet of Telendos, visible from the coast and reachable by small boat in minutes, has a laid-back charm all its own. From Pothia, local ferries connect to Kos (about 45 minutes) and the wider Dodecanese network.
