Where it leaves from
Ferries depart from Mykonos New Port (Tourlos), north of Mykonos Town, and arrive at Naxos Town (Chora) — where the Portara marble gateway looms on the harbour promontory, one of the most distinctive ferry arrivals in Greece. Taxis and the KTEL bus connect Naxos Town to the rest of the island.
High-speed vs conventional
High-speed catamarans operated by SeaJets complete the 1-hour crossing comfortably in calm conditions and are by far the most popular option in summer. Conventional Blue Star ferries take about 2 hours but are larger, carry vehicles, and ride out the meltemi better than catamarans. In high meltemi conditions (typically August) be prepared for catamaran delays; keep a buffer before any onward connections.
Operators
SeaJets provides fast catamaran services in season. Blue Star Ferries runs conventional ferries on a route that often continues from Naxos to Paros, Ios or Santorini — useful if you want to chain two legs in one journey. Always check whether your specific sailing is direct or includes intermediate stops, as this affects total travel time.
Naxos: the Cyclades' biggest island
Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades and arguably the most rewarding for longer stays. Its interior conceals Byzantine churches, medieval towers, and mountain villages like Halki and Apiranthos. The west coast beaches — Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna and Plaka — stretch for kilometres. From Naxos Town's busy ferry port you can continue to Paros (30 minutes), Santorini, Ios, Amorgos or Piraeus, making it a natural hub for multi-island trips.
