Where it leaves from
Ferries to Kythnos depart from Piraeus, the main port of Athens (about 40 minutes from the city centre by metro). Kythnos is the nearest Cyclades island to Piraeus, making it one of the quickest Aegean getaways from Athens.
Fast ferry vs conventional
- High-speed ferry (SeaJets) — approximately 2 hours, passengers and vehicles, fast and weather-dependent.
- Conventional ferry (Fast Ferries or SeaJets) — approximately 3 hours, carries cars, more comfortable in rough weather.
The shorter crossing time makes either option easy as a day trip, though most visitors stay at least a night to enjoy the island properly.
Kythnos: thermal springs and twin beaches
Kythnos has two claims to fame. Loutra, on the north coast, has been a thermal spa destination since antiquity — the iron-rich hot springs feed a small, charming spa town that remains popular with Greek families. The beach at Kolona is one of the most photographed in the Cyclades: a double-sided sandbar connecting the main island to a small rocky islet. Episkopi beach on the south coast is another highlight, usually quieter.
Island hopping onwards
Kythnos sits at the northern tip of the western Cyclades chain. From Merichas you can take ferries south to Serifos, Sifnos and Milos. The island is popular for Greek summer holidays, particularly in August, so book ahead if you plan to travel during peak season.
