Ios Ferries

Everything you need to know about ferries to and from Ios — the Ormos port, routes through the southern Cyclades, and how to fit Ios into an island-hopping trip between Athens, Naxos and Santorini.

The port: Ormos

Ios's ferry port is at Ormos (or Gialos), the sheltered bay on the island's west coast. The small quayside has a handful of cafés and travel agencies, but the island's social life is centred on Hora, the whitewashed hilltop village, and Mylopotas, the long sandy beach — both reached by frequent buses from the port.

Ormos can handle large conventional car ferries as well as high-speed catamarans. In peak season the port gets busy with arrivals from multiple directions, so confirm your departure pier when you arrive.

Routes from Ios

Ios sits on the main southern Cyclades ferry corridor, making onward connections straightforward:

  • Piraeus (Athens) — direct services by Blue Star and SeaJets, roughly 3.5 hours high-speed or 7 hours conventional.
  • Naxos — northward in about 30–45 minutes (high-speed), a natural next stop on the classic route.
  • Santorini — southward in under 1 hour high-speed, one of the most-travelled inter-island legs.
  • Paros and Mykonos — further north, with connections most days in summer.

The island

Ios has a reputation as the party island of the Cyclades — and the Hora nightlife earns it — but there is more to the place than that. The island has good beaches, a quiet agricultural hinterland, and claims (with questionable evidence) to be the burial place of Homer. Mylopotas is one of the longest sandy beaches in the Cyclades. Visitors who stay more than a night or two often find the quieter north end of the island a pleasant contrast to the village.

Planning tips

Peak-season ferries to and from Ios — especially on the Athens–Ios–Santorini corridor — sell out well in advance. Book at least two weeks ahead in July and August. High-speed services from SeaJets and Blue Star are weather-dependent in the meltemi season; if your schedule is fixed, a conventional ferry is the safer choice. Buses between Ormos, Hora and Mylopotas run frequently in summer and are the easiest way to move around the island.
