Closest to the Peloponnese

Poros sits at the very edge of the Saronic Gulf, separated from the Peloponnese mainland by a strait barely 400 metres wide. Small ferry boats shuttle between Poros Town and Galatas on the mainland throughout the day, making the island a natural gateway for combining island-hopping with exploring the ancient sites of the Peloponnese — Epidaurus and Nafplio are within easy reach.

The crossing from Piraeus

Hellenic Seaways runs both Flying Dolphin hydrofoils (about 1 hour) and conventional ferries (about 2.5 hours) from Piraeus. Most services call at Aegina and/or Methana en route. The conventional ferry carries cars; the hydrofoil does not.

Poros Town and Lemon Forest

Poros Town is a pretty neoclassical harbour town on a small round islet connected by a causeway to the larger forested main island (Kalavria). Kalavria is covered in fragrant lemon groves — the famous Lemon Forest — and has good cycling and walking tracks through pine and citrus trees down to sheltered beaches.

Planning tips

Poros is quieter than Aegina or Hydra and less well-known internationally, which makes it a good choice for a relaxed break. The beach at Askeli and the Russian Bay are popular swimming spots accessible by water taxi or bike.
