A car-free island
Hydra is unique in the Greek islands: there are no cars, no motorcycles, and no roads beyond a few mule paths. All goods are moved by donkeys and the occasional water taxi. This ban on motor vehicles has preserved the island's 18th-century stone mansions, narrow lanes and unspoilt harbour in a way that no other Saronic island can match.
The crossing from Piraeus
Hellenic Seaways runs Flying Dolphin hydrofoils from Piraeus to Hydra in approximately 1.5 hours. The service usually calls at Poros and/or Aegina along the way. There is no conventional slow car ferry — the route is passenger-only.
The harbour and the island
Hydra's horseshoe harbour is one of the most photographed in Greece, ringed by handsome stone captain's mansions that date from the island's 18th-century shipping wealth. Artist Leonard Cohen lived here, and Hydra retains a bohemian, creative atmosphere. Beyond the port, stone paths lead to hilltop monasteries, secluded swimming rocks and small tavernas.
