Where it leaves from
Naxos ferries depart from Piraeus, the main Athens port. The island's ferry quay is right below the hilltop Portara (the ancient marble doorway) — one of the most dramatic ferry arrivals in Greece. Most services from Piraeus call at Paros en route, which adds a short stop but provides the option of breaking the journey there.
High-speed vs conventional
- High-speed catamaran — roughly 3.5 hours, faster and more expensive, weather-sensitive.
- Conventional ferry — 5 to 6 hours, more spacious, carries cars and is more stable in rough weather.
Naxos as a base
At over 400 km², Naxos is the largest and arguably most self-contained of the Cyclades. It has excellent beaches, mountain villages and local food. Its central position also gives it strong ferry connections: Paros is just 30–45 minutes away, and Mykonos, Santorini and Ios are all within a few hours by fast ferry.
Operators and booking
Blue Star Ferries and SeaJets cover the route. In peak season there are several departures per day from Piraeus. Book ahead for July and August, especially if you need car space — Naxos is popular with Greek families who drive.
