The route

Toulon is the third of the major French mainland ports serving Corsica, alongside Marseille and Nice. Ferries to Bastia — Corsica's main commercial port on the northern tip of the island — cross the Gulf of Genoa overnight, allowing passengers to make good use of sleeping time. The route is operated by Corsica Ferries and Corsica Linea, both running large ro-pax vessels with cabins, restaurants and vehicle decks.

Overnight crossing

Most Toulon–Bastia sailings are overnight, departing in the evening and arriving in Bastia the following morning. This makes the crossing efficient: you travel while you sleep and step off the ferry ready to explore the island. An en-suite cabin or at minimum a comfortable berth in a shared cabin is highly recommended.

Taking a car

Driving is by far the best way to explore Corsica's mountainous interior, winding coastal roads and mountain-pass routes such as the Col de Bavella. Both operators carry cars, motorcycles and campervans. Vehicle space is the first to sell out in summer — book as far ahead as possible for July and August, and even for late June and early September.

Booking tips

Shoulder season (May–June, September–October) offers more relaxed crossings and lower fares. Compare both operators for schedule fit: timetables vary by week and season. Arrive at the Toulon ferry terminal — on the western side of the commercial port — with good time to spare if loading a vehicle. Toulon is easily reached from the A57 and A8 motorways.
