Mljet Ferries
Everything you need to know about ferries to and from Mljet — the Sobra and Polače terminals, connections from Dubrovnik and Split, and how to plan a visit to Croatia's most forested island.
The ports: Sobra and Polače
Mljet has two main entry points by sea. Sobra is the island's principal port and handles the Jadrolinija car ferry from Prapatno on the Pelješac peninsula — the main route for visitors arriving by car. Polače, on the north-west coast and closer to the National Park lakes, is the preferred landing for high-speed catamarans arriving from Dubrovnik. The two ports are connected by island bus, though the service is infrequent, so check timings when planning onward movement.
Routes from Mljet
From Dubrovnik (Gruž harbour), Krilo and Jadrolinija catamarans serve Mljet in roughly 1–1.5 hours, making it one of the more accessible southern Dalmatian islands. From Split, the journey is longer — typically around 4–5 hours on the car ferry or catamaran, often via Hvar and Korčula. The car ferry connection from Prapatno is the most practical route for those who want to explore the island by car or bicycle.
Mljet National Park
The western third of Mljet is a National Park, covering two saltwater lakes (Malo and Veliko Jezero) connected to the sea. The small Benedictine monastery on the island in the middle of Veliko Jezero is one of Dalmatia's most photographed sights. Entry to the park requires a ticket and is best visited by bicycle or on foot — car access is restricted inside the park boundaries.
Planning tips
Mljet is one of the quieter Dalmatian islands despite its beauty, which is part of its appeal. Accommodation is limited, so book well ahead for July and August. There are no large towns — Sobra and Babino Polje are the main settlements. If you're planning a day trip from Dubrovnik, the catamaran timetable gives you roughly 5–6 hours on the island, enough for a loop of the National Park lakes.
