Crete Ferries
Crete's main ferry port at Heraklion connects the island to Piraeus (Athens) by overnight ferry and to several Cyclades islands in summer.
Heraklion port
Crete's primary ferry port is at Heraklion, the island's capital, on the north coast. It handles the main overnight ferries from Piraeus and is well placed for Knossos, the Minoan Palace, the Archaeological Museum and the central and eastern parts of the island.
The overnight crossing from Athens
The classic Athens–Crete connection is the overnight ferry from Piraeus. Large, comfortable ro-ro vessels sail in the evening and arrive in Heraklion the next morning. The ships have cabins (from basic 4-berth to private sea-view), reclining seats, restaurants and a vehicle deck. The crossing takes roughly 8–9 hours.
Summer Cyclades connections
In summer, Heraklion also connects to several Cyclades islands — Santorini, Mykonos, Paros and others — by high-speed catamaran and conventional ferry. These routes make it straightforward to combine Crete with a Cyclades island-hop without returning to Athens.
Practical tips
Book cabins and car spaces well in advance for July and August — the overnight boats to Crete are popular with Greek families as well as tourists. Heraklion port is a short walk or taxi ride from the city centre; the harbour fortress and old town are nearby if you have time before your sailing.

Frequently asked questions
- Is it worth taking a cabin on the overnight ferry to Crete?
- Yes — a cabin is strongly recommended for the overnight crossing from Piraeus. You board in the evening and arrive the next morning rested, effectively saving a night's accommodation.
- Which Crete port should I use, Heraklion or Chania?
- Heraklion is central and closest to Knossos and the east; Chania (port at Souda) suits the west and the Samaria Gorge. Both have overnight ferries from Piraeus.
- Can I take a car on the ferry to Crete?
- Yes — the main overnight ferries (Minoan, ANEK/Blue Star) are large ro-ro vessels that carry cars, campervans and motorbikes. Book car space in advance for summer.
