Cagliari Ferry Port

Everything you need to know about ferries to and from Cagliari — Sardinia's main port, routes from the Italian mainland, and how to plan your crossing to the island's southern coast.

The port: Cagliari

Cagliari is Sardinia's capital and its principal ferry gateway. The passenger ferry terminal sits in the commercial port on the southern coast of the island, a short distance from the city's historic centre. Arriving by ferry you step into a working Mediterranean port with the old Castello quarter rising above.

Routes to and from Cagliari

Cagliari is the destination for overnight mainland crossings from Civitavecchia (the port of Rome) and Naples. Both are classic overnight runs — you board in the evening and wake up in Sardinia the following morning. The route from Civitavecchia is the most direct link to Rome; Naples adds a slightly longer crossing but opens Sardinia to travellers from southern Italy.

Operators

Tirrenia is the historic Sardinia specialist with the broadest schedule, running both the Civitavecchia and Naples routes. Grimaldi Lines operates on the Civitavecchia corridor with large ro-ro ships suited to cars and campervans. Both carriers run large ferries with restaurant facilities, lounges and a range of cabin types.

Planning tips

Book several weeks ahead for summer sailings in July and August, especially if you need car space — vehicle decks fill quickly on Sardinia routes. Shoulder-season crossings (May–June, September) offer more flexibility and lower fares. Cagliari is also a practical base for exploring the southern half of Sardinia: the beaches of Villasimius, the Sulcis coast and the Barumini nuraghi are all within reach.
